New publication tells the story of how values of sustainability translated into reality at the Holcim Apasco cement plant project in Hermosillo, Mexico

The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction has published Producing cement in the desert – Holcim Apasco plant in Hermosillo, Mexico. The book features a brief technical description of all production stages and an explanation of the green buildings, giving an inspiring view of the latest milestone on Holcim’s journey toward sustainable development. It is a valuable book for learning about and promoting sustainable construction and advocating sustainable cement production; it is a convincing proof of the technical competence and social and environmental responsibility of Holcim.

Innovative architecture focused on infrastructure for communities
Holcim Awards Asia Pacific Winners announced in Singapore

The Holcim Awards Gold 2011 for Asia Pacific (USD 100,000) was awarded to a project that upgrades a traditional building method with effective low-tech measures through engineering and design. The Earthen School Tipu Sultan Merkez, in a small village near Lahore, Pakistan and designed by architect Eike Roswag of Ziegert Roswag Seiler Architekten Ingenieure, Germany, is constructed using a cob (clay, sand, water, and straw) lower-floor combined with an upper floor made of earth-filled bamboo walls. Intense research on cob construction resulted in a significant increase in strength and durability, and extended maintenance intervals compared to former approaches.

Holcim Awards winners for North America announced in Washington, DC

The winners of the 3rd International Holcim Awards competition for sustainable construction projects and visions from North America have been announced. A total of USD 300,000 was presented to ten diverse and innovative projects from Canada and the USA at a ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning projects show how greater levels of sustainability can be reached in building and construction through people-focused designs that include simple adaptation, innovative materials, and clever architecture.

Sustainable construction as a key to better urban life

Holcim Awards winners for Latin America announced in Buenos Aires

The winners of the 3rd International Holcim Awards competition for sustainable construction projects and visions from across Latin America have been announced. A total of USD 300,000 was presented to eleven outstanding projects at a ceremony in Buenos Aires. The winning projects mainly address the challenges of intensified urbanization – and range in scale from innovative community buildings through to broad master plans and infrastructure projects.

Internationale Anerkennung für Schweizer Projekte


Im dritten internationalen Projektwettbewerb der Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction gingen aus rund 50 Preisen gleich drei an Schweizer Beiträge: In Europa wurde ein Team der Zürcher Architekten Gramazio & Kohler für eine bahnbrechende Technologie der Betonverschalung ausgezeichnet, in Afrika/Mittlerer Osten der Zürcher Architekt Bob Gysin für ein Gebäude mit holistisch nachhaltigem Baukonzept in den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten sowie ein Team der Berner Fachhochschule Architektur, Holz und Bau für die Entwicklung erschwinglichen Baumaterials aus wiederverwerteten Reststoffen in Nigeria. Der Holcim Awards Wettbewerb wird alle drei Jahre durchgeführt und ist mit total USD 2 Millionen dotiert.

New publication shows how the Nantes School of Architecture contributes to sustainable construction

The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction has published University building in France – Nantes School of Architecture. The book details the holistic approach of Lacaton & Vassal Architects to the social, economic, and environmental performance of the Nantes School of Architecture, culminating in the production of extra space at no additional cost. The translation of a minimum budget into a maximum space constitutes a radical break that challenges the standards on which architecture and sustainability are founded.

Juries nominate winning projects of the 3rd Holcim Awards competition


Independent juries comprised of professionals from 25 countries have now assessed all entries which were complete and formally correct in the 3rd International Holcim Awards competition for projects and visions in sustainable construction. From more than 6,000 submissions received, 2,200 fulfilled the challenging requirements be presented to the juries.

Holcim Awards jury discovers sustainability aspects at new cement plant in Mexico
