Marc Angélil

Marc M Angélil is Dean of the Department of Architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Switzerland.

He was a founding member of the Management Board and of the Technical Competence Center (TCC) of the Holcim Foundation.

His research at the newly formed center "Network City and Landscape" (NSL) addresses recent developments at the periphery of large metropolitan regions. He is the author of several books, including Inchoate: an Experiment in Architectural Education on methods of teaching and Indizien on the political economy of contemporary urban territories.

Marc Angélil received his architectural degree from the ETH Zurich where he also completed his doctoral dissertation.

He was an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and subsequently Associate Professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Marc Angélil practices architecture with his partners Sarah Graham, Reto Pfenninger, Manuel Scholl and Hanspeter Oester – the architectural cooperative agps.architecture with offices in Los Angeles and Zurich. Their built projects include the new Midfield Terminal at Zurich Airport, the town center and light-rail station of Esslingen in Zurich, as well as the remodeling of a factory for housing and commercial uses. Current projects include the extension of the headquarters of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in Gland near Geneva, the Children’s Museum of Los Angeles (CMLA), an aerial tram infrastructure project in Portland, Oregon, the Zurich International School, as well as sports facilities for Adidas in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

He was the recipient with partner Sarah Graham of the 2008 Design Award “Honor Award for Architecture” from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for the Portland Aerial Tram project.

Marc Angélil was a member of the Holcim Awards jury for region Europe in 2005 and for region Latin America in 2005, 2008 and 2011. He moderated the workshop Mine the city - With logistics to circular metabolisms at the 3rd Holcim Forum 2010, “Re-Inventing Construction” held in Mexico City.
