Mona Serageldin is Vice President of the Institute for International Urban Development (IIUC) based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
The Institute operates at the policy, program and project levels with teams that always include regional experts and members of its network of local affiliates. The Institute is committed to promoting sustainable urban and regional development.
Mona Serageldin obtained a BSc in Architecture from Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering. She later obtained a masters degree in Urban Planning and a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning from Harvard University.
She retired from the position of Adjunct Professor of Urban Planning at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) in June 2008 after being a faculty member since 1985.
Mona Serageldin has developed approaches to urban planning and management that rely on capacity building methods through technical assistance and training. She has worked on projects sponsored by USAID, UNCHS/HABITAT, the World Bank and various foundations in developing nations around the globe. In 2004-05 she served as one of the experts on the Millennium Project’s Task Force 8: Improving the Lives of 100 Million Slum Dwellers by 2020.
In 2009, she was appointed to the Higher Council on Planning and Urban Development in Egypt which is charged with the approval of strategic plans and urban development plans at the national, provincial and governorate levels as well as plans and regulations for areas of special cultural and environmental significance.
