Günter Meinert

Günter Meinert is a Senior Urban Expert at the Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (German Technical Cooperation), GTZ.

Since 2007, he has been seconded as Senior Urban Specialist to the “Cities Alliance – Cities without Slums”, a global program hosted at the World Bank in Washington, DC.

He holds an engineering degree in spatial and environmental planning, and a post master degree in decentralization and local development. In 2008, he was appointed honorary professor in urban management by the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin).

Günter Meinert began his professional career in 1988 as researcher at the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. He joined the Association of Municipalities of the Greater Frankfurt Area in 1991 and was responsible for the land use plan for Frankfurt and adjoining cities.

He was previously Head of Field Competence for decentralization, regional and urban development and has spent several years working for GTZ in Colombia as resource management advisor, and Bolivia where he advised national poverty reduction strategies. In addition he was responsible for several projects dealing with local governance, spatial planning, disaster prevention and cultural heritage.

As head of “Local and Regional Governance” at GTZ from 2004, he provided technical support for the organization’s global project portfolio in decentralization and urban development principally in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
