spacersustainable construction

At the Holcim Forum 2010 (l-r): Marcos Sánchez and Mark Wasiuta.

Marcos Sánchez is an architect and theorist teaching at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles.

He studied at the University of California, Berkeley, Princeton University, and UCLA. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and partner at the office of the International House of Architecture (IHA).

His research and teaching focuses on the Post-War architectural interest in, and production of, “environment”, the aberrant pedagogy of 1960s environmental design and the Post-War history of “soft” technology.

A current and related series of design research projects pursues issues around Los Angeles atmosphere. Inversion Layer reconstructs historical Los Angeles smog, was supported by a fellowship from the Banff New Media Institute (BNMI). The Graham Foundation recently awarded IHA a research grant for House Arrest, a project that researches the culture, architecture and technologies that have emerged around marijuana grow house operations in the San Fernando Valley and the Inland Empire. Off Track, a project for New York’s Seagram’s Plaza that examined Post War behavior prediction in public space, was also supported by the BNMI.

He has held teaching and research positions in architecture at Woodbury University, UCLA, Princeton University and the University of California, Berkeley. His recent publications include “House Arrest” in Valley Summit: Designing the San Fernando Valley and “We now join this project already in progress” in Primitives: Foundation Studio.
