This school project in Burkina Faso by Diébédo Francis Kéré, Kéré Architecture, Germany integrates social and environmental performance. Passive cooling during oppressive summer heat creates an indoor climate conducive to learning. The project also improves social conditions by providing jobs and training, and restores the environment through reforestation.

Urban remediation and civic infrastructure hub, São Paulo, Brazil

The project by Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner, Urban-Think Tank (U-TT), Brazil in one of the world’s largest informal communities includes a terraced public space with areas for urban agriculture, water management, and a music school. It prevents further erosion and dangerous mudslides on the steep slopes and provides social and cultural infrastructure.

The Flussbad project of Jan & Tim Edler, realities united, Germany is an urban plan to transform an under-utilized arm of the River Spree in the heart of Berlin into a natural 745m-long “swimming pool”. It creates a public urban recreation space uses a 1.8ha reed bed natural reserve with sub-surface sand bed filters to purify the water.

High-efficiency concrete formwork technology, Zurich, Switzerland
Global Holcim Innovation 1st prize 2012

This construction technology by Gramazio & Kohler, Architektur und Digitale Fabrikation – ETH Zurich, Switzerland uses molds to fabricate cast-on-site complex form concrete structures with reusable and digitally-fabricated wax formwork. This approach saves material and energy compared to traditional molds, and is not limited to low curvatures.

Low-cost apartments incorporating smart materials, Hamburg, Germany
Global Holcim Innovation 2nd prize 2012

This project led by Frank Barkow, Barkow Leibinger Architects, Germany uses innovative techniques and materials including prefabricated lightweight-concrete elements with recycled foamed glass as an internal aggregate. The monolithic structures are 1/3 the weight of conventional concrete forms and deliver aesthetic impact.

Efficient fabrication system for geometrically complex building elements, London, UK
Global Holcim Innovation 3rd prize 2012

This research project by Povilas Cepaitis, LLuis Enrique, Diego Ordoñez and Carlos Piles, AA School of Architecture, UK on an efficient cast concrete fabrication system for geometrically complex building elements considers simultaneously the design of free and ambitious shapes, as well as the material efficiency and economic performance of the construction process.

The 3rd International Holcim Awards attracted entries for 6,065 sustainable construction projects to be built in 146 countries. The projects that received Holcim Awards Gold, Silver and Bronze in each region in late 2011 automatically qualified for the Global Holcim Awards 2012. In addition, all prize-winning projects at the regional level – including the Acknowledgement and “Next Generation” winners – automatically competed for Global Holcim Innovation prizes.
