Harry Gugger is full professor, School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He is also Principal of Harry Gugger Studio based in Basel, Switzerland. Harry Gugger studied mechanical engineering from 1977 to 1979. From 1984 to 1989 he studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) with Flora Ruchat and at Columbia University, New York with Tadao Ando. He received his degree in architecture at ETH Zurich in 1990. Harry Gugger was visiting professor at the College of Architecture and Building Technology at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (BUW), Germany in 1994 and taught at the EFPL in 2001. He was appointed professor at EPFL/ENAC in May 2005. His recent projects include the Eberswalde Technical School Library in Germany (1997-1999); Tate Modern in London (1998-2000); the Head Office for Prada in New York (2000-2002); and the Schaulager Basel Laurenz Foundation in Münchenstein, Switzerland (2000-2003). Harry Gugger was a partner at the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron from 1991 until 2009. His collaboration with the firm began in 1990 when he was an assistant at the summer school in Karlsruhe, Germany. The firm received several awards for projects for which Harry Gugger was the partner in charge, for example the Stirling Prize of the Royal Institute of British Architects for the Laban Center in London in 2003. In 2004 Harry Gugger received the Prix Meret Oppenheim, and was winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition in 2010 for the National Pavilion of Bahrain. He is a member of the Board of the Holcim Foundation, and a member of the Technical Competence Center (TCC) of the Holcim Foundation. He was also Head of the Holcim Awards jury for region Europe in 2008 and head of the Global Holcim Innovation prize jury in 2012. [last updated: 23-Mar-12]
