The global phase of the competition showcases the best entries from more than 1500 submissions from 118 countries, and encourages innovative, future-oriented and tangible approaches within the building and construction industry.

Regional winners were honored with Holcim Awards, Acknowledgement or Encouragement prizes which were presented in September/November 2005 in Geneva, Switzerland; Boston, USA; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Johannesburg, South Africa and Beijing, China.

The 15 winners of the gold, silver and bronze prize in each of the five regions automatically qualified for the global phase of the competition. The global jury assessed eligible projects from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Philippines, South Africa, Spain, USA, and Venezuela. Results of the Global Holcim Awards 2006 were announced in Bangkok, Thailand in May 2006:
