Zurich, February 5, 2004. – The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction has signed a donor agreement enabling the ETH in Zurich to create a new assistant professorship. The position is to be filled effective 2005 with an initial tenure of six years in accordance with a regular ETH election procedure.

ETH President Olaf Kübler and Holcim CEO Markus Akermann described the initiative as a continuation of the traditional partnership between the major global cement producer and the internationally renowned ETH. The teaching and research remit of the assistant professorship covers all scientific questions relating to the sustainable planning, construction, use, development and recycling of buildings and civil engineering structures and is thus directly in keeping with the goals of the Holcim Foundation: promoting and supporting initiatives and projects that identify construction-related solutions to today’s pressing technological, ecologic and socioeconomic challenges and fusing these solutions with architectural excellence and a high quality of life.

At the end of the year, the Holcim Foundation will be launching a global competition awarding prizes for sustainable building projects revolving around the basic needs of housing, education and healthcare. The ETH Zurich will be responsible for scientific direction and coordination of the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction.
