The first Holcim Awards competition cycle was launched in the last quarter of 2004, inviting architects, engineers and other specialists in the construction industry to submit projects that meet the challenges of sustainable construction.

Over 3000 projects from 118 countries were submitted for the competition. These entries were assessed by regional juries in five geographic regions: Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa Middle East and Asia Pacific.
