Lucy Musgrave is Co-director of Publica, in London – a creative consultancy specializing in research and practice within the public realm. Her work encompasses strategic masterplanning, policy context, intelligence and research for brief development, urban character assessment, and issues of inclusive, participative design practices and design quality in the regeneration and development sectors.
She is a leading practitioner on issues surrounding sustainable communities, social architecture and community engagement, and was previously director of General Public Agency, where over a seven year period she developed programs for public, private and third sector clients on the integration and sustainability of social architecture and the public realm in new developments.
Prior to this she was director of The Architecture Foundation, where over an eight-year period she developed programs of action research in the field of social inclusion and the built environment.
Lucy Musgrave has been responsible for pioneering new thinking, methodologies, and evaluation for community planning and creative regeneration strategies. She staged a series of influential “public forums” on the future of London in 1996, which attracted over 15,000 people and affected government policy.
She has championed emerging practitioners and international best practice, was responsible for the publication of two UK government sponsored directories on the best young architects in Britain and produced the handbook Creative spaces: a toolkit for participatory urban design. She also co-authored Design and landscape for people: new approaches to renewal with Clare Cumberlidge.
Lucy Musgrave has been a member of the UK government’s Urban Sounding Board; the Greater London Authority’s Public Realm Advisory Group; the Mies van der Rohe European Prize for Public Space; the Young Architect of the Year Awards; a trustee of The Photographers’ Gallery, London; an external examiner at the Department of Architecture and Spatial Design, London Metropolitan University; and is an honorary fellow of the RIBA and a CABE Enabler and a CABE Space Enabler.
She is also a founding trustee of the Sheila McKechnie Foundation, a new charity set up to support the next generation of campaigners.
Lucy Musgrave was a member of the Holcim Awards jury for region Europe in 2008 and 2011.
