Silver: Temporary urban extension in a former landfill, Maribor, Slovenia
Type of project:
Landscape design
Start of construction:
June 2010
Main author:
Belinda Tato, architect, ecosistema urbano, Madrid, Spain
Project Summary
With more waste than ever heading toward the incinerator, opportunities arise for former landfills to be put to new use. The Temporary urban extension in a former landfill harnessed the unlimited potential of its disused site. Its aim is to show how an area once recognized by its mounds of garbage can be re-naturalized into a living city quarter.
(r-l) Belinda Tato at the press conference after the finalist certificate hand-over; Alain Bourguignon, CEO of Holcim Spain; Luis Maldonado, Director of Madrid's Superior Technical School of Architecture (host of the event); and Fernando Navarro y Bidegain, architect of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
