How buildings and infrastructure are designed, constructed and used has a critical impact on the planet. Featured projects include: a river remediation and urban development scheme in Fez, Morocco (Gold), a low-impact greenfield university campus in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (Silver), sustainable planning for a rural community in Beijing, China (Bronze), and a self-contained day labor station in San Francisco, USA (“Innovation”).

Global finalists from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Hungary, India, Slovenia, Switzerland, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates and the USA are also featured in detail and additional examples from a further 25 countries on all continents demonstrate that sustainable construction approaches are pursued in diverse locations, economies, climates and societies.

About the Holcim Awards competition

The Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction competitions seek innovative, future-oriented and tangible construction projects to promote sustainable responses to the technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues affecting building and construction on a local, regional and global level. In the second Holcim Awards competition almost 5,000 projects to be realized in over 120 countries were submitted: designs for sustainable buildings, urban planning concepts, and state-of-the-art engineering proposals – an abundance of visionary construction ideas.

The competitions are run by the Swiss-based Holcim Foundation, offer USD 2 million in prize money per three-year cycle, and are sponsored by Holcim Ltd – one of the world's leading suppliers of cement and aggregates – and its Group companies in around 70 countries.
