Lighthouse tower with low-carbon footprint, Dubai, UAE

The Lighthouse Tower project deserves its name for many elements of the project plan: literally, the building's narrow floor plan allows excellent daylighting throughout the interior; physically, the skyscraper stands taller than the surrounding high-rises of Dubai; symbolically, its 400-meter height reflects the status of the finance center it houses; and metaphorically, the project is conceived as a beacon for sustainable construction. Indeed, skyscrapers too can be green buildings.

The office building concept was winner of the Holcim Awards Bronze 2008 in Africa Middle East and incorporates passive cooling and light control through a responsive façade expected to halve energy consumption. The modern filigreed exterior reinterprets the traditional mashrabiya screens of the region. Also integrated into the façade are three 29-meter wind turbines and some 6,000 photovoltaic panels, which generate power for the building. Kinetic energy of ascending elevators is captured and converted into electricity. Cleverly integrating a great many green strategies, Lighthouse Tower sets a new benchmark in high-rise design.
