Keisuke Hanaki is Professor Emeritus of Urban Engineering at the University of Tokyo (Todai), Japan. He was one of the core members of Todai Sustainable Campus Project (TSCP) and is a key contributor to the education program for environmental leaders in the graduate school program.

He is also Vice-President of the Science Council of Japan, and President of the Society of Environmental Science.

His research addresses holistic environmental management in urban areas for sustainability. Recent topics include: integrated analysis of emission reduction of greenhouse gas from urban activity; mitigation of urban heat island; solid waste and wastewater management for lower environmental loading; life cycle assessment; evaluation of bio-fuel production; environmental psychology; and creating a city that would offer living comfort and have little environmental impact by clever use of information systems.

He completed his PhD at the University of Tokyo (1980) and then worked at Tohoku University, Japan; Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand; and the University of Tokyo.

He was a recipient of the Academic Award of the Society of Environmental Science (2008) and the Japan Society Award of the Japan Society on Water Environment (2012).

He was a lead author in the second and the third assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the field of water management. His publications include Urban Environmental Management and Technology (Springer, 2008) and Environmental Leadership Capacity Building in Higher Education (Springer, 2013). His research has been published in journals including: Biological Conservation, Environmental Research Quarterly, Journal of Asian Urbanism, and Journal of Environmental Information Science.

Keisuke Hanaki was a workshop presenter at the 6th International Holcim Forum for Sustainable Construction in Cairo, April 4-6, 2019.
