The exhibition “MACHEN!” (to make) at the AEDES Network Campus follows the development process of six projects including the Secondary school with passive ventilation system. All six projects are examples of a new, reflective approach to the topic: for a building to be truly sustainable, architects must use their own creative and conceptual skills – where technology is employed not for its own sake, but as a means to a well-executive series of objectives.

In the third cycle of the Holcim Awards competition, a remarkable number of projects by German architects and engineers were prize winners – and amongst them, five from offices in Berlin – acting as the catalyst for the exhibition “MACHEN! The German winners of the Holcim Awards 2011/12”. The exhibition “MACHEN!” (to make) follows the development process of six projects. All six projects on display are examples of a new, reflective approach to the topic: for a building to be truly sustainable, it is not sufficient to equip conventional buildings with the latest eco-gadgets. Instead, architects must use their own creative and conceptual skills – where technology is employed not for its own sake, but as a means to a well-executive series of objectives.

The Holcim Awards competition submissions are presented using models, detailed studies and experiments – while updates enhance each presentation by detailing their further development towards realization and the adaptations that have improved or better contextualized each project. Francis Kéré has implemented a series of successful projects in Burkina Faso. The current high school complex in his home village of Gando shows how a blend of traditional and modern building technologies has been particularly successful. Also, the team of Anna Heringer, Martin Rauch and Nägele Waibel architects with Salima Naji, are together updating traditional building techniques with their Training Center for Sustainability in Morocco. Ziegert|Roswag|Seiler are creating a multi-level school building in Pakistan by using a ground level cob construction with lightweight bamboo upper floor.

The “Flussbad” (river pool) of realities:united is linked to the urban beach culture of Berlin in the early 20th Century and demonstrates the potential for recycling historic qualities of space for the city of today. The “Smart Materials House” of architects Barkow Leibinger brings together the infra-lightweight precast concrete together with laminated timber to create both architectural quality and ecologically- and energy-efficient materials. The plan for an entire building complex in Helsinki to establish a “sustainable living” and “low-to-no carbon emission” precinct includes a medium rise timber office building by Sauerbruch Hutton that is a global innovation in timber construction.

Complementing the exhibition will be three discussions held at the ANCB Metropolitan Laboratory, where the project architects will report on the current level of development of their winning projects.
