An 85,000m2 eco-park for sustainable research and technology that will promote small and middle-sized enterprises is planned for OSTIM – one of Turkey’s largest formal industrial zones.

The holistic concept responds to the challenging sloped topography: Workshops, warehouses, and test labs are housed within a hillside terraced wing. The green roofs add natural insulation and can be used for outdoor experiments and as recreation areas for the building occupants.

The jury greatly appreciated the project’s objective to promote economic growth in the region through innovation in environmental technologies.

Eco-Techno Park: Holcim Awards Gold 2014 for Africa Middle East – Project Overview

An ecological park for sustainable research and technology planned for Ortadoğu Sanayi ve Ticaret Merkezi, an industrial zone located in Ankara won the top prize. Creating an attractive communal space for its users with minimum interference to the natural context, the building and landscape design by architects Onat and Zeynep Öktem of ONZ Architects in Turkey incorporates various sustainable features.

Green building and enterprise hub in Turkey wins Gold

Holcim Awards Africa Middle East ceremony, Beirut, Lebanon

An ecological park for sustainable research and technology planned for Ortadoğu Sanayi ve Ticaret Merkezi, an industrial zone located in Ankara won the top prize. Creating an attractive communal space for its users with minimum interference to the natural context, the building and landscape design by architects Onat and Zeynep Öktem of ONZ Architects in Turkey incorporates various sustainable features such as natural lighting, geothermal heat pumps, green roofs, passive ventilation and water efficiency/irrigation systems.

“Promoting economic growth through innovation in environmental technologies”

Project entry 2014 Africa Middle East - Eco-Techno Park: Green building showcase and enterprise hub, Ankara, Turkey

The Holcim Awards 2014 jury for Middle East Africa greatly appreciated the project’s objective to promote economic growth in the region through innovation in environmental technologies. The building is accordingly conceived as a test bed for sustainable research exploring new techniques pertaining to the use of renewable resources – energy for heating and cooling, rainwater retention, temperature control, daylight, and natural ventilation. At the core of the scheme is the intention to establish a careful balance between the natural and fabricated realm – an objective most clearly expressed in the project’s landscape strategy, which aims to integrate the building in its natural setting.
