Xochimilco is one of five lakes of the former water system in the Valley of Mexico. This freshwater lake enabled developing a farming method called “chinampa” – artificial islands, allowing several crops to grow all year round. Xochimilco has suffered one of the most radical transformations resulting from urbanization. The efforts to save the area are insufficient to address ecological needs and social aspects. New plans are envisioned for this site which is recognized by UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
PumaBús is a response to one of the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s (UNAM) greatest problems: traffic and parked vehicles occupying all main roads and blocking pedestrian zones at the campus. A free public transport system was implemented and parking in designated areas provided; the PumaBús enables movement within the campus. Further enhancements include interconnectivity with other public transport nodes and the development of Bicipuma (bicycle) routes.
