Carlos Alberto Ricardo has been a staunch defender of environmental and indigenous rights for the past 35 years and was a member of the Holcim Foundation Awards 2005 jury for Latin America.

He spearheads a socioenvironmental development approach in Brazil, which brings the traditional knowledge and wisdom of indigenous groups to the forefront and entrenches their rights through public policy changes and economic undertakings.

He is founder of one of Brazil’s most important social, environmental, and human rights organizations, the Center for Ecumenical Documentation and Information (CEDI), has been a pioneer in advancing the links between human rights and environmental protection for decades.

He was Director of the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), Brazil, and holds a Master of Social Sciences from USP (1972).
