His portfolio spans education, healthcare and conservation infrastructure, including the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture, the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the African Leadership University campus, Nyarugenge District Hospital, Munini Hospital, Ruhehe Primary School, the Maternity Waiting Village and the Regional Centre of Excellence in Biomedical Engineering and eHealth. These projects reflect his commitASS, Christian leads the Africa Studio, overseeing projects that combine ment to architecture as a catalyst for equitable development and long-term resilience.
Christian is also dedicated to building the next generation of African design leaders. Through the African Design Centre — a field-based apprenticeship programme — he supports emerging architects in developing socially responsive design skills rooted in local context and global standards.
Recognised internationally as a leading voice in African architecture, Christian curated an exhibition at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in 2023. He was named a Quartz Africa Innovator in 2017 and is widely acknowledged for advancing contemporary African design narratives, including contributions to discourse on Afrofuturism and the future of African cities.
He has taught at the University of Rwanda’s School of Architecture and authored articles and book chapters, including “An African Theory of Architecture” in The Architectural Guide to Sub-Saharan Africa (DOM, 2021) and “Creating Design Leaders: The African Design Centre” in The Public Interest Design Education Guidebook (Routledge, 2019).
Christian Benimana holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Tongji University’s College of Architecture & Urban Planning in Shanghai. He was a Global Health Corps Design Fellow and previously served as Secretary General of the East Africa Institute of Architects.

Christian Benimana holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Tongji University’s College of Architecture & Urban Planning in Shanghai, China. He was a Global Health Corps Design Fellow in 2010 and more recently served as the Secretary General of the East Africa Institute of Architects.
