Leon van Paassen is Associate Professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering & the Built Environment (SSEBE) and Senior Investigator at the Centre for Bio-mediated & Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG) at the Arizona State University based in Tempe, AZ, USA.
In his research, he integrates the fields of environmental biotechnology and geotechnical engineering, aiming to develop sustainable solutions, which improve resource efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of civil and mining engineering industry.
He holds a MSc in Engineering Geology (2002) and a PhD in Environmental Biotechnology (2009) from the Department of Applied Sciences, Delft University of Technology. His thesis on Biogrout: Microbially induced carbonate precipitation as ground improvement method resulted in several publications, patents and was awarded with several national and international awards.
During and after his graduation he worked several years as a geotechnical engineering consultant at IFCO Foundation Expertise and at research institute Deltares. He was previously Assistant Professor of Geo-Engineering, Delft University of Technology (2009-16).
His work has been published in journals including Canadian Geotechnical Journal, Engineering Geology, Environmental Geotechnics, Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, Journal of Soils and Sediments
Leon van Paassen was a workshop presenter at the 6th International LafargeHolcim Forum for Sustainable Construction in Cairo, April 4-6, 2019.
