Project entry 2020 for Europe

Last updated: November 13, 2021 Vienna, Austria

Living Green

The number of trees on our building is much more than on the site itself might have found place. Literally, we lifted the park with trees up to a height of more than 30 meters, and additionally used all 4 facades to grow a lot of additional trees. It is functional green, for shading and local cooling, as well as emotional green, giving the eye and soul a good place to rest, in the middle of the vibrant town.

Connectivity

The new IKEA City store enables visual connection, using glass in the façade. Together with the green façade and well balanced structural shading the solar gains are still under excellent control.

Sufficiency

IKEA Vienna consumes energy scarcely: Highly compact, well insulated and shaded, equipped with concrete core heating/cooling, equipped with sluice/air lock doors. This well-balanced approach leads to excellent energy efficiency, with a heating demand of only 6 kWh/ma and a cooling demand of only 12 kWh/ma. In connection with district heating the carbon footprint for all energy services, including heating, cooling, hot water and lighting is no more than 32 kg/ma.
