The Holcim Costa Rica head office building, completed in 2004, is used to explain the Holcim Foundation's five target issues for sustainable construction. Designed to provide a comfortable indoor environment through passive means rather than mechanical air conditioning, the building has been recognized internationally as an outstanding example of sustainable design.
The Mexican Society of Architects named it one of the outstanding projects of 2005, and Spanish GEO Magazine identified it as one of five exceptional sustainable buildings on the planet. The publication includes a contribution from the building's architect, Bruno Stagno, an internationally renowned specialist in tropical architecture, who explains how the design achieves strong sustainability performance while presenting a distinctive visual identity.
