Jesse LeCavalier is also the Daniel Rose Visiting Assistant Professor in Urban Studies at the School of Architecture, Yale University in New Haven, CT, USA where he teaches courses in Architectural Design and Landscapes of Fulfilment: Architecture & Urbanism in Contemporary Logistics.

He uses research, writing, and design to explore the architectural and urban implications of contemporary logistics. His book The Rule of Logistics: Walmart and the Architecture of Fulfillment (University of Minnesota Press, 2018), examines the activities of the international retailer to tell a larger story about the ways the logistics industry has developed at different scales and through the emergence of particular technologies.

Jesse LeCavalier holds a Doctor of Science from the ETH Zurich, a Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University in Providence, RI, USA.

He was previously Assistant Professor in the College of Architecture & Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ, USA (2012-19). He was the Walter B Sanders Fellow at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning (2010-11) where he taught design studios and research seminars. He spent three years teaching foundational design at the ETH Zurich and has also taught studios at Temple University Rome, Oberlin College, and American University of Sharjah. His professional experience includes two years at agps.architecture in Los Angeles, where he was involved with the design of the Portland Aerial Tram and the city’s new Children’s Museum.

He was the recipient of the New Faculty Teaching Award from the Association of the Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) (2015) and was the Sanders Fellow at the University of Michigan (2010-11). He was a Poiesis Fellow at the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University and a Senior Researcher at the Future Cities Laboratory as part of the Singapore-ETH Center for Global Environmental Sustainability.

His research has appeared in design journals like AD, Cabinet, Public Culture, Places, Art Papers, and Harvard Design Magazine. His article, “All Those Numbers: Logistics, Territory, and Walmart,” which appeared in Design Observer: Places, was named by The Atlantic as one of “Nearly 100 Fantastic Pieces of Journalism” in 2011. He is a co-author, with John Harwood and Guillaume Mojon, of This Will _ This (Standpunkte, 2009) and has contributed to the collections Infrastructure as Architecture (Jovis Verlag, 2010), Cities of Change: Addis Ababa (Birkhäuser, 2009) and Deviations: Designing Architecture (Birkhäuser, 2008).

He was a Moderator of the Workshop “Metropolitan Scale” at the 5th International Holcim Forum “Infrastructure Space” in Detroit (2016).

Jesse LeCavalier was a member of the Holcim Awards jury for region North America in 2020.
