Laurent Stalder is Professor for the Theory of Architecture in the Institute for the History & Theory of Architecture (GTA), Department of Architecture (D-ARCH), at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) in Switzerland.

The main focus of his research and publications is the history and theory of architecture from the 19th to the 21st centuries where it intersects with the history of technology.

He studied architecture at the ETH Zurich (1996), undertook a scholarship with the Swiss Institute for Archaeology & Architectural Research in Cairo (1996-97), and obtained his PhD in Architecture from the ETH Zurich (2002).

Laurent Stalder was previously Assistant Professor in the History Department of Université Laval in Québec City, Canada (2002-06), and Assistant Professor for Architectural Theory at the GTA Institute (2006-11). He was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2009).

His publications include Hermann Muthesius, 1861-1927: das Landhaus als kulturgeschichtlicher Entwurf (gta Verlag, 2008); Valerio Olgiati (Edition Dino Simonett, 2008); Der Schwellenatlas: von Abfallzerkleinerer bis Zeitmaschine (Arch+Verlag, 2009); and Fritz Haller: Architekt und Forscher (Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum, 2014). His articles have been published in various journals, including AA Files, Arch+, Greyroom, Journal of Architecture, Werk, Bauen & Wohnen and Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte.

He is a member of the board of trustees of the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basle and the Werner Oechslin Library Foundation. He is member of the scientific board of the LIAT, of the ENSA-Paris-Malaquais.

Laurent Stalder was a Workshop Moderator at the 5th International Forum for Sustainable Construction dedicated to “Infrastructure Space” held April 7-9, 2016 in Detroit, USA.
