Nancy Couling is an architect who has recently completed her PhD under Harry Gugger at laboratoire bâle (laba), an architecture and urban design studio of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), based in Basel, Switzerland.

She researched and coordinated the Barents Sea project (2011-12) before beginning her doctoral studies at the EPFL’s Doctoral Program Architecture and Sciences of the City (EDAR) in 2011 with the research topic “The Role of Ocean Space in Contemporary Urbanization”.

She studied architecture at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and received a scholarship to study at the Università Iuav di Venezia (IUAV), Italy.

She completed the architectural practice examination in New Zealand and built projects both privately and within the architectural offices Dave Launder Architect and Rewi Thompson Architect, before travelling to Italy.

Her experience in architectural practices includes: Ugo Camerino, Massimiliano Fuksas (Italy); Otto Steidle, Christoph Langhof (Germany); Liang Peddle Thorp (Hong Kong); and LAB Architecture Studio (Australia).

She formed the interdisciplinary partnership cet-0 in Berlin in 2005, (2005-2010 cet-01) focusing on urban design, and also taught in the Department of Urban Design at Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin).

She is the author of Barents Lessons: Teaching and Research in Architecture with Harry Gugger and Aurelie Blanchard (Park Books, 2013).

Nancy Couling was a workshop expert on the urbanization of the oceans at the 5th International Forum for Sustainable Construction dedicated to “Infrastructure Space” held April 7-9, 2016 in Detroit, USA.
