Project entry 2014 Europe – Vertical Restructuring: High-rise tower rehabilitation, Nantes, France

The project speaks about a new relationship between the city and the inside of the tower. This link doesn’t go through a new cladding, but by a new in-between space with a different thickness depending upon its use. Inside this thickness there are patios, stairs and decks – all the vertical communication is focused on the façade: seen from outside and bringing life to the building. Moreover this element manages all the thermal needs and allows people to have access to open air despite the height.

The jury read the project as a kind of manifesto that questions the tenets of the Modern Movement and proposing instead an understanding of architecture enriched by multifunctional relationships, social interaction, and spatial sequences. The project presents a strategy of how to deal with the built legacy of the post-war era, without destroying its substance – a process of transformation rather than erasure.
