Mphethi Morojele


Mphethi Morojele is Director of MMA Architects based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

He founded MMA Architects in 1995 soon after the end of Apartheid. Since then the practice has completed several award-winning projects including South Africa’s embassies in Germany (2003) and Ethiopia (2009), and the Freedom Park project in Pretoria (2010). The practice was also finalist in the continent-wide competition for a new Pan African Parliament in South Africa. The firm employs 20 people and collaborates with artists, urban planners, environmentalists and traditional healers towards transforming architecture in Africa.

Mphethi Morojele completed his Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Cape Town in 1990 and Master of Science in Architecture at the Bartlett in London in 1993. He has taught studios at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg and was curator of the South African exhibition Between Ownership and Belonging at the 2006 Venice Architecture Biennale.
