Ross Exo Adams


Ross Exo Adams is Assistant Professor of Architecture & Urban Theory at the College of Design, Iowa State University, based in Ames, IA, USA.

He is an architect, urbanist and writer whose research looks at the historical and political intersection between circulation and urbanization. His writing has been published and presented widely on the inherent relations between architectural practice and geography, political and legal theory, political ecology and philosophy.

He has taught at the Bartlett School of Architecture (University College London), the Architectural Association (AA), the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, and at Brighton University, United Kingdom. His work has been exhibited in the Venice Biennale, The Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York City, the Centre of Contemporary Architecture in Moscow and the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam.

Ross Exo Adams holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Biomaterials Science (2000), a Master of Architecture from the Berlage Institute (2006) and a PhD from the London Consortium (2014), for which he was awarded the 2011 LKE Ozolins Studentship by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

He is author of Circulation and Urbanization [Society & Space series] edited by Stuart Elden (Sage Publications, 2016), and Invisible Machines: Toward a Theory of Interiorization that examines the relation between architectural technologies of enclosure and emergent forms of governmentality.

Ross Exo Adams was a workshop expert on machines of urbanization at the 5th International Forum for Sustainable Construction dedicated to “Infrastructure Space” held April 7-9, 2016 in Detroit, USA.
