The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction sought out the best sustainable construction projects in Europe – and awarded the winners about a quarter millions Swiss Francs at the Awards ceremony in Geneva. In his address, Swiss Federal Councillor Joseph Deiss said that sustainability, which has a long tradition in Switzerland, is necessary in all aspects of life, and that economic and ecological priorities are no contradiction.Media release – Prizes for sustainable construction projects in Europe » Lesen Sie mehr (German) » Pour en savoir plus (French) » Más información (Spanish) » Per saperne di piú (Italian) »
An important environmental contribution is made by this work in that it proposes convincing measures for restoring and enriching a landscape left ecologically and aesthetically impoverished after drainage intervention and intensive agriculture during the last century. Conceived as a beneficial environmental “refund”, the project performs as a buffer zone that holds prospective urban development in abeyance.
This signals an assertive, yet sensitive stance relative to purely market-driven speculation. Issues of site choreography, building placement, as well material combinations are carefully considered. The work also exercises high ethical standards by recreating an attractive social space and deploying forward thinking at a large scale to critically rethink future environmental developments.
Also commendable is the sensibility to ecological issues such as natural wildlife habitats, energy use, and environmentally friendly alterations to the context. By harnessing the natural capacity of the environment itself - thermal heat, solar energy, etc - the proposal suggests an economically sensitive approach to implementation and maintenance costs, while also offering aesthetic enrichment to an otherwise neglected area.See more
This entry from Italy is merited for what the authors call a re-naturalization program. An important environmental contribution is made in that the proposal calls for restoring a landscape left ecologically impoverished after drainage intervention and intensive farming during the last century. In this respect, the project offers a beneficial environmental “refund,” serving to establish a zone protected from future urban development.
An assertive yet responsible stance is taken toward purely market-driven speculation. The choreography of the site, integration of the building with the terrain, and material combinations are carefully considered. Equal care is given to creating an attractive social environment for recreation while respecting natural wildlife habitats. By harnessing the natural capacity of the environment, the work is economically viable and offers aesthetic enrichment of an otherwise neglected area.Download project entry poster (PDF, 4.05 MB) »See more
Our website search engine covers the web pages including project descriptions and expert profiles, PDFs, images and videos on the Holcim Foundation website. To improve your search results, here are some tips:
Our search defaults to term-pairing AND. If you search sustainable construction - then the search engine will look for any items containing sustainable AND construction
photovoltaic OR solar
Looks for either word
(clay OR mud) AND (school OR university)
Combine alternative terms for more specific searching
Excludes a term from results, automatically ANDs other terms listed
Use quotation marks to search for a specific phrase or combination
Asterisk (*) matches any word or phrase - so archit* will find architect, architecture, architectural as well as architrave
