Born in Switzerland in July 1960, his natural talent for writing and connecting with people led him towards a career in journalism and communications. He was held in the highest regard amoungst his peers and the Foundation’s network for his professionalism, inexhaustible drive, and commitment. He died in August 2022, aged 62 years.
His dedication, energy and passion helped develop the Holcim Foundation into a renowned and trusted global partner for architects, design and engineering professionals, and academics dedicated to the transformation of the built environment. He edited almost 50 publications related to sustainable construction and together with the team of the Foundation conducted six cycles of regional and global Awards competitions including six international expert Forums and more than 50 prize hand-over ceremonies.
Edi Schwarz was a journalist and editor of a Swiss trade magazine for the construction industry before joining a daily newspaper covering the Zurich area. He was then appointed editor-in-chief of a private radio station in the same region.
From 1992, he was Head of Communications of a Swiss building materials holding company that was later integrated into the Holcim Group. He subsequently became Head of Corporate Communications for the united operations of Holcim in Switzerland. He led the introduction of the first-ever cement product brands in Switzerland, integrated new companies in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe, and was part of the team that developed and implemented the initial global Holcim brand in 2001.
From 1998 until 2003, Edi Schwarz was the global Head of Internal & Online Communications of the Holcim Group.
