Dante Martinelli

Ambassador Martinelli was appointed in November 2008 as Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations in Geneva.

Previously, Ambassador Martinelli was Swiss Ambassador in the People’s Republic of China (2004-08), Ambassador and Head of the Swiss Mission to the European Communities in Brussels (1999-2004) as well as Swiss Ambassador in Italy (1996-99).

Born in Faido, in the Canton of Ticino, Switzerland in 1947, Dante Martinelli studied politics at the l'Institut d'études politiques de Paris (IEP).

He joined the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in 1979, in Bern and Tunis. He was a member of the Office of Integration DFAE/DFE (1981-85), when he was transferred to Washington in charge of international financial business.

In 1989, he became an Advisor at the Embassy of Switzerland in Paris, focusing on economic issues.
