His career studies geomaterials including glass, clays and cement with applications in the field of construction, energy and the environment. He is also interested in nanotechnology, architecture, conservation, and urban sciences; and is also involved in a national project on innovative education methods in construction materials science and architecture.
He was Professor of Thermodynamics & Materials at ESPCI-Paris (1999-2016), and was Visiting Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2016-18).
He was Scientific Director of IFSTTAR (French Institute for Science & Technology of Transportation, Development and Networks, formerly LCPC), the main civil engineering laboratory in France (2009-14), and President of the Condensed Matter Physics division of the National Committee for Scientific Research (1995-2000).
He studied bio- and chemical engineering; and completed a PhD in Materials Science at the University of Leuven, Belgium.
