Special Holcim Awards publication featuring winning projects by German architects, planners and engineers
Machen! – Die Deutschen Gewinner der Holcim Awards 2011/2012 is a new publication of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction which brings to life the six Holcim Awards 2011/12 prize-winning projects with were submitted by authors from Germany and that are located on three continents. Written by Jeanette Kunsman and edited by Ilka and Andreas Ruby, the evocative text and informative illustrations document a broad variety of responses to the global need for sustainable construction and highlight in particular their contributions to enhance the quality of life. Written by Jeanette Kunsman and edited by Ilka and Andreas Ruby, the evocative text and informative illustrations document a broad variety of responses to the global need for sustainable construction and highlight in particular their contributions to enhance the quality of life. German project authors were responsible for two prize-winning projects built on home soil: the Global Holcim Awards 2012 Bronze “Urban renewal and swimming-pool precinct” in Berlin by realities:united, and the Acknowledgement prize 2011 winning “Low-cost apartments incorporating smart materials” in Hamburg by a team led by Barkow Leibinger.
Credits for the top prize winning Global Holcim Awards Gold 2012 “Secondary school with passive ventilation system” in Burkina Faso by Kéré Architects, and for the Holcim Awards Gold 2011 Asia Pacific “Locally-manufactured cob and bamboo school building" in Pakistan by Eike Roswag and his team in Pakistan also go to Germany. Rounding out a strong performance of submissions by German professionals is the Holcim Awards Bronze 2011 Africa Middle East winner “Training center for sustainable construction” in Morocco by Anna Heringer and her team, as well as Acknowledgement prize 2011 winner “Medium rise timber office building in low-to-no carbon emissions district” in Finland by Sauerbruch Hutton Architects.
From the first three cycles of the Holcim Awards competition, an impressive 13 projects are linked to German professionals. The book provides an opportunity to reflect on these prize-winning projects, many of which are already completed or under construction. This book is available in German only. A further publication in English, Third Holcim Awards – Sustainable Construction 2011/2012 covers all 53 prize-winning projects of the 3rd International Holcim Awards competitions across 2011 and 2012.
