Over the past 15 years, most residential construction has targeted the high-end high-rise luxury market. This project entry argues against this trend. Instead, it favors a more reciprocal infill strategy of preserving urban heritage and re-introducing low-rise high-density areas – this respects cultural heritage and keeps the social fabric alive.

Solid future for sustainable construction in Asia Pacific

The winners of the second Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction from across region Asia Pacific were announced at a ceremony in New Delhi. Total prize money of USD 270,000 was presented to ten projects that show future-oriented and tangible approaches to urban renewal and development, energy efficiency and affordable housing.

“Next Generation” prize for urban planning concept for Shanghai

This project argues against the increasingly generic high-rise trend in Shanghai and other large cities China. It favors a more reciprocal infill strategy of preserving urban heritage and re-introducing low-rise high-density fragments. In order to realize the anticipated additional housing space the existing buildings shall be extended and renovated, courtyards shall be built and the public areas revitalized. Such a transformation will strengthen social cohesion and shared responsibility.
