Shannon Mattern is an Associate Professor in the School of Media Studies at The New School in New York City, USA.

Her research and teaching address how the forms and materialities of media are related to the spaces (architectural, urban, and conceptual) they create. The scope of her work includes libraries and archives, media companies’ headquarters, place branding, public design projects, urban media art, media acoustics, media infrastructures, and material texts.

She was appointed Associate Professor in 2012, and was previously Assistant Professor of Media Studies (2004-12) and Director of Graduate Studies (2006-09) at The New School. Prior to joining The New School, she was Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania (2002-04) and a Senior Researcher at New York University (1999-2001).

She obtained a BA in English and Communications at The Pennsylvania State University (1998), and PhD in Culture and Communication from New York University (2002).

She is author of Deep Mapping the Media City (Univ of Minnesota Press, 2015) and The New Downtown Library (Univ of Minnesota Press, 2007), which was supported by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. Her work has appeared in various journals – from Public Culture to the Journal of Architectural Education – and in numerous edited collections. She is also a columnist for the landscape, architecture and urbanism journal Places, where she writes about media and cities.

Shannon Mattern was a workshop expert at the 5th International Forum for Sustainable Construction dedicated to “Infrastructure Space” held April 7-9, 2016 in Detroit, USA.
